The history of water sports in Rwanda has evolved from centuries of essential traditions, such as the use of dugout canoes for trade and the unique cultural practice of "swimming cows" on Lake Kivu, into a modern pillar of the nation's adventure tourism. While informal aquatic activities have always been deeply woven into lakeside life, the formalization of water sports began in earnest with the 2000 establishment of the Rwanda Swimming Federation, which now oversees 15 clubs dedicated to competitive excellence. Today, the industry is a strategic component of the Visit Rwanda campaign, transitioning from traditional fishing and transport to diverse recreational offerings—including white-water rafting on the Mukungwa River and professional kayaking tours—facilitated by the country's safe, bilharzia-free volcanic lakes.
